Tottenham Hotspur are keen to re-sign Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin after letting him leave the club last summer, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
The Lowdown: Cirkin’s Sunderland move
The U20 England international came through the academy at Hotspur Way, having made 25 appearances for the U18s and 21 appearances for the U21s (via Transfermarkt).
However, after struggling to be earn a chance to shine with the Lilywhites’ first-team, Spurs agreed to sell the 20-year-old defender to the Wearside club last summer.
Since his arrival at the Stadium of Light, Cirkin has made 49 appearances for the Black Cats, including eight games in the Championship this season.
The Latest: Spurs want to re-sign Cirkin
According to a surprising report by journalist Alan Nixon (via HITC), Tottenham are keen to re-sign Cirkin – despite his departure from the club only one year ago.
It is suggested Spurs will carry out final checks on the 20-year-old before fully coming to a decision as to whether they will make a move for their academy prospect in January.
The Sunderland Echo previously reported the Lilywhites have a £6m buy-back option included in the deal, which is set to run until the summer of 2024.
Therefore, his potential return to Spurs’ first-team would add another homegrown player to Antonio Conte’s squad.

The Verdict: Promising talent
Whilst playing in League One with the Black Cats last season, Cirkin averaged 2.5 clearances, 1.8 tackles and 1 interception per game, having made 37 league appearances for the Wearsiders.
During his tenure at Hotspur Way, former manager Jose Mourinho was full of praise for the youngster, having claimed:
“He’s a kid with a lot of quality, and I look forward to bringing him to train with us, and to help his development.”
However, having been rated by coaches whilst at the academy, it begs the question as to why Spurs were willing to let him leave on a permanent deal last season.
Either way, his talents appear to be on Conte’s radar going into the January transfer window.
