However, the 24-year-old often made the wrong decisions in possession and when he had an opening in front of goal, he was caught in two minds before sending a tame effort straight at the Lyon goalkeeper.
Klaassen was replaced by Ademola Lookman at half-time and Everton supporters were quick to have their say on his showing via social media.
While some said he is “out of his depth”, another went a lot further and said “he’s the worst Everton player I’ve ever seen”.
