da pinup bet: Defeat to Watford on Saturday means that Everton have now won just one of their last ten Premier League matches as their slide down the table continues.
da betway: It was the first time in 29 years that the Toffees had been beaten by the Hornets and despite making a fine start to the campaign – winning four of their first five league games – manager Ronald Koeman is really coming under scrutiny from the club’s supporters right now.
While he did strengthen his squad in the summer, the Dutchman may want to add more new faces during the January transfer window, especially after seeing one of those – Yannick Bolasie – ruled out for a number of months with a serious knee injury.
However, Koeman may be told that he has to clear out some of the deadwood in his squad before he can make any additions.
Here are FIVE players who should be included in his January cull at Goodison Park…
James McCarthy
According to reports in the Mirror, the Republic of Ireland international is unhappy at Goodison Park and wants a move away from the club in January with Crystal Palace, West Brom and Tottenham said to be among the interested parties.
The midfielder only signed a new long-term deal in 2015 but he is understood to be unhappy with life under Koeman, and the 26-year-old could head the list of players set to leave the Merseyside outfit during the upcoming transfer window.
Oumar Niasse
The Senegalese striker joined Everton for £13.5m less than a year ago but he has failed to impress in his appearances for the first team, with Koeman telling him that his career at Goodison Park was over in the summer.
Even though the first-team has struggled in recent weeks while Niasse has scored an impressive eleven goals in five appearances for the U-23s, he doesn’t look like he will be considered by Dutchman, and as a result has to go in January.
Arouna Kone
The 33-year-old signed a one-year contract extension earlier this year that takes his deal through until next summer, but it seems more and more unlikely that the striker will be an Everton player next season, and therefore he should be sold in January.
The former Wigan man has made just five appearances in all competitions under Koeman this term – scoring twice in an EFL Cup win against Yeovil – but like Niasse he hasn’t even been given a look in when the side has been struggling and Romelu Lukaku has found it difficult to find the back of the net.
Darron Gibson
Since making the move from Manchester United, Gibson has failed to nail down a regular spot in Everton’s starting XI, whether it be down to form or injury, and he could depart Goodison Park during the January window.
The 29-year-old has made just one appearance for the first-team this season in the EFL Cup against Yeovil, and with the likes of Gareth Barry and Idrissa Gueye ahead of him in the pecking order, Koeman will surely look to offload the midfielder next month.
Tom Cleverley
Despite only moving to the Toffees on a five-year deal from Manchester United in the summer of 2015, Cleverley is already understood to have been made available for transfer by Koeman next month.
While he made 30 appearances in all competitions under Roberto Martinez last season, the England international has found first-team football hard to come by under Koeman, with the 27-year-old making just eleven outings this term, with some of those coming from the substitutes’ bench.
